The 6th Grade Social Studies classes have been learning about Ancient Mesopotamia. Students in Mrs. Houchin's social studies class moved through stations to investigate the geography, religion, achievements, politics, economy, and social classes of Ancient Mesopotamia.
Last week, Mrs. Houchin's 8th grade social studies classes spent time discussing the events and aftermath of September 11, 2001. The students also participated in 9/11 stations to gain a deeper understanding of that day in American history.
Congratulations to the following students for being selected for the Star-Spangled Raiders, our middle school national anthem singers! They are Piper Ring, Audrey Schade, Silas Pratt, Shelby Nichols, Katie Martin, Chlora Berbower, Chase Burns, Grady Cash, and Colby Carlen.

The Cumberland Middle School Cross Country team ran at the Olney Invite on Monday. Adam Wolke placed 8th and Kyler Houchin 18th for the boys. Paige Wolke placed 13th and Ivy Brummer 18th for the girls. In the JV race, Audrey Schade placed 9th and Katie Martin placed 20th. Way to go, Raiders!
Cumberland Middle and High School students and staff had the opportunity to listen to the inspiring story this week of Brad Hurtig, a double-hand amputee who went from a tragic injury to All-State in high school football. Brad presented a powerful message to the students to find a way!
Brad was injured while he was still in high school during his evening job in a factory. As he was recovering, he attended his high school football practices as an observer on the sidelines. He was influenced by his football coach one day when he taught him that, “If you are thirsty enough, you will find a way.” With this message, he learned not to give in to his fears and ultimately go for his goals.
He shared this message with the students, encouraging them to find a way when things are tough. He showed them what it was like to persevere, go after what they want in life, and not let anything get in their way.

In Ms. Harris's science class, the students are reviewing key concepts about ecosystems. To help organize and reinforce their learning, they created an ecosystem flap graphic organizer. So far, they've explored topics including types of ecosystems, biomes, biotic and abiotic factors, and photosynthesis!

Cumberland Middle School baseball will play its first game of the regional on Saturday, September 13, at 12 PM in Tuetopolis. They will play the winner of the Shelbyville/Brownstown game being played on September 11. Good luck, Raiders!
During a recent reading assignment, Mrs. Figgins' class encountered a story featuring a narrator who finds renewed strength through playing the accordion. The students were delighted to discover that Brooks Braden, a middle school student, is an accomplished accordion player. Brooks graciously volunteered to perform for the class, sharing his musical talent and even allowing classmates to try the instrument themselves. The class extends its sincere appreciation to Brooks for his generosity and enthusiasm.
The middle school girls cross country team placed 3rd at the Little Trojan Cross Country Invitational held at EIU today. Liz Sudkamp placed 8th and Ivy Brummer placed 9th to medal. Fifteen Raiders earned new PR’s including Paige Wolke in 13th place in the girls race and Adam Wolke placing 14th in the boys race.
Mrs. Hall's 7th and 8th grade students were grouped into teams to design an experiment to test the strength of paper towels using what they have learned about the scientific method. Next week, they will merge each team's ideas into one experiment!
Cumberland Middle School softball will play its first game of the IESA Regional on September 10 at Casey at 4:30 PM. They will take on the winner of the Paris Mayo/Marshall game on September 8 in Paris. Good luck, Lady Raiders!
